third brake light staying on after off and key removed

first off I did do a search

I have noticed lately that our HHR's 3rd brake light will stay on after my wife has parked locked the car and we are inside the house. I have to go back out start it, back up a little then shut the engine off and then MOST of the time it will go off. I look for it now but I know she doesnt check it all the time. Im afraid it will be on while shes at work and come out to find a dead battery.

Any fix for this?...anyone else experience this or something we are doing wrong?

Center Brake Light

The center stop light receives power regardless of the ignition switch being on or off. It receives power from the stop light switch near the top of the brake pedal lever. The switch is either out of adjustment or it needs to be replaced.

You have an 07 it should still be under warranty, yes ?

we bought it in Sept 2006 so its beyond the 3 years. It only has 18k miles though.

I'll check that switch tonight

next time you see this and before doing anything else reach in and pull up on the brake petal and see if it goes off..could be a sticky/ out of adjustment switch......

Thanks thats a good idea. I will definately try that.

Im surprised no one else has had this problem, usually with these cars its a common thing, especially when its such low miles.

JB1 - check this thread seems like the Stop Switch may be out of adjustment or defective here also -

Glad i'm not crazy! Parked my car at work today and came out to head home and the batter was dead... Now after having it parked in my driveway on the trickle charger i noticed the 3rd brake light stayed light up. Fudging with the brake pedal fixed it temporarily but looks like there are some things to take a look at this weekend to get it fixed..

Sorry to hear that your car is giving you a little bit of trouble. I understand that your going to look at somethings this weekend. If you need assistance on your issue I would be more than happy to lend a helping hand. Just let me know.

Thank you,
