Timing chain question

I'm waiting for parts for the timing chain. While waiting can I clean up the inside of the valve cover and where the chains are at? If so with what? Thanks

Kerosene/Diesel is a good solvent.

Make sure to change the oil as soon as you're done washing. In fact, you should drain the oil and leave the plug out before beginning the wash, so the solvent can exit immediately. Solvent left in the engine (oil pan) can ruin the seals.
