Torque converter?

Hi, I am new here and wanted to see if any other owners were having the same problem I am. I own a 2007 HHR, 2.2L that has started "surging", that is the only way I can describe it. Started about a month ago at speeds of 25 to 40 MPH, you could feel it surging a bit and as I watched, the RPMs increased a bit. Now it does it when I have the cruise control engaged also, again the RPMs increase. Mechanics say the torque converter pulley is working correctly, but it is getting the wrong message from the tranny.....they want to pull the tranny and see what is wrong. There are no codes coming up during diagnostics. Any ideas or has anyone else has this 'surging' problem?
Thanks for any help offered.

First, get a second transmission shop to look at it. May just need a new TCM. A standard OBD reader will not pull trans codes, need a scanner.

Not trying to be facetious, but - "torque converter pulley" sounds like an erroneous reference.

More likely to be the muffler bearing!

They probably mean "Torque Converter Lock-Up Clutch", and if it's receiving a command from the TCM to "Lock-Up" at speeds below the normal range, you'll get a surging "Chuggle" as GM used to refer to it.

As Don stated, you're best bet is a second opinion.

Funny. Today I saw that word "chuggle" reading through the HHR repair manual.

Sounds like an English word. Not American english.

The first time I recall seeing "Chuggle" in print was in the FSM for my Uncle's 1982 Chevrolet Celebrity.

It's a term that GM engineers came up with around the time of the first electronic engine controls and the dreaded "Feedback" carbs.

In the 70's, mechanics used to refer to the condition as a "Fish Bite", especially when referring to a misfire condition.

Welcome to the site, just for fun please try this, go to Autozone and have the codes read, write the codes down.
Disconnect the battery negative terminal for 30 minutes to rest the computer.
Drive the car and see when the CEL comes on.
Get the codes pulled again , use the search window , enter in the code

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am going to take it to another transmission place and see what they say.

I haven't heard the term "chuggle" in the last 10 yrs.... most of the time it was a worn out turbine shaft seal or a bad PWM/harness connection.
