Transaxle leaking

Hello everyone and thanks for the warm welcome.

My wife drives a 2007 HHR 2LT and I have done all the maintenance on it since it was new. Last summer I did the 100,000 mile service. Never had any leaks until now. It now has 110,000 miles on it and the transaxle just started (all of a sudden) to leak up above the full plug area where it mates with the engine block and I can't see exactly where it is coming from. Hope it is not a pump or torque converter seal leaking. Might be though. It is not the pan gasket. It drips on the front edge of the pan and blows to the back when driven. Leak is not to bad right now, but I need to figure out what to do or how to fix it. Anyone have any thoughts or had this problem before? Thanks.

Are you ABSOLUTELY sure it is trans. fluid? Is it a reddish color or a darker brownish black?

Oh and a big WELCOME.....to bad it is under these circumstances.

to the forum!

To echo Snoopy, sorry about the circumstances though.

Obviously as stated above, you need to determine if it's in fact ATF or engine oil. You could have a leaking valve cover gasket, oil pressure sending unit, or rear main seal instead of an ATF leak.

Welcome to the site you say you did a 100,000 mile service. Did you change the trans fluid? If so could it be over filled and leaking out the vent?

It is reddish color. It is not oil. Valve cover is not leaking, or rear main is not leaking, or oil pressure sending unit either. I changed the transaxle fluid and I measured what drained out and poured the same amount back in. Where would I find the vent?

The vent is the large boltish thingy that you removed to pour the ATF in. Unless you found some other way.

For future reference, there is an ATF level control port on the side of the trans. That's how you check the level.

All of the details are available from the SEARCH box at the top of this page. Someone will probably post some links from there for you.

Thanks, I refilled the trans through the plastic vent-cover on top. Level is good, I know where the plug on the side of the trans is located. The leak is up above the plug and slightly forward. Everything is to tight inside the engine compartment, and I can't see exactly where the leak is originating from. That is my problem right now. Just wondered if anyone else has had this type of leak before and what it was.

If the leak is above the plug...... too much ATF. When the car is level, engine running ATF temp 104F there should be fluid visible, but not flowing out of the control plug. I know, visible? Fill till it drips, then replace plug after it stops dripping.

The only time fluid level would be above the control plug is when the engine is off. I'm having trouble visualizing.

Could you have a drip from around the oil filter? pressure sending unit, cap etyc.
