Transmission problem, car cant drive
so, just now when i was on my way home i noticed my car begin to slip while trying to shift into gears. It has never done that before so i pulled over at the first place i saw and tried to turn the car off and then start it back up to see if that made any difference at all.
when i turned the car back on i wasnt able to drive at all, i could shift into all the gears but couldnt accelerate.
so i called my brother for a tow, and left my car off for about 10 minutes and then i turned it on and i could drive, but not fast, 25mph tops, what felt like the transmission kept slipping and caused me to go extremely slow.
does this sound like a bad transmission? or just no transmission fluid? it has never even slipped at all before, it just happened once and here we are.
one more question, IF it is the transmission, is it covered under warranty?
anything will help, thanks!

It sure sounds like a trans problem. Have you noticed any fluid on the ground under the car? As for covereage, what year is the car and how many miles on it? If it's an 07,08 or 09 with under 100K, the powertrain warranty should cover it. If it's an 06, it is probably out of warranty but checking with a dealer or GM wouldn't hurt. If you have relatively low miles they might help you out.
well i talked to them this morning, there is a tow truck coming to get me and take it to the dealer
for the record i have an 06 with about 68,000 miles. I bought the car used and it was GM certified, and i have the extended warranty so the dealer said it SHOULD be covered under my warranty. i do have to pay $60 for the tow ride there though
i havent noticed any fluid under my car, that was the first thing i thought, but i cant recall anything
ive brought the HHR into the shop a few times in the past couple months and it was all covered under warranty, that should be the same case for this issue correct?
thanks for any help!

so i just got off the phone with the chevy dealer, they say that something came up and hit my transmission pan and that it is NOT covered under my warranty, they say my insurance has to pick up the tab. but i never recall running over anything or even scraping my car at all!
no problem, so i figured, i called my insurance company and they tell me that i dont, nor have i ever had full coverage insurance!
but the thing is, i HAD to have full coverage insurance when i leased my car through my bank or they wouldnt lease it. so i had to have had it.
the insurance company tells me that i have never had it and they wont cover it.
and i cant add full coverage insurance until my car is fixed.
so looks like ill have to be picking up the tab, which will probably have to be a new transmission that i cant afford at my $8.50/hr job with my car payment and insurance payment.
any ideas on how to get around anything, i know its not honest but i most likely wont be able to afford any repairs
im waiting on the dealer to call me back with a quote so i can accurately gauge my heartattack.
ill report back as soon as i know anything

trans leak
The problem sounds like the pan was punctured and the fluid slowly leaked out causing the trans to slip more and more until it couldn't move the car.
Here's what I'd suggest, depending on your mechanical ability and having a place to work: get the car back from the dealer, get it up high enough to look at the pan yourself and then make a decision. If the pan is punctured, determine if you would be able to remove it and install a new one. Once you have a new pan on and replace the fluid, you'll see whether the transmission has been permanently damaged. If it works and shifts, you probably caught it in time.
I almost hate to even suggest this but...if the damage to the pan is visible and small, you could try to seal it up temporarily, fill the trans up and test drive it; then decide if it can be repaired. The next step would be to replace the pan.
Good luck,

thanks for the kind words guys
i went up there to look at the car myself, the pan is definitely dented pretty bad, it pushed the filter up causing it to crack, but i still dont understand how this happened. i dont recall hitting anything and i dont let anyone drive my car!
turns out my dad knows the guy who is working on the transmission and is going to try to cut me some deals and see what he can do, ill get a quote tomorrow and see what we can do about it.
the bank isnt supposed to lease my car if i dont have full coverage insurance, which apparently, i dont but the did it anyway. all this seems really fishy to me and i feel like im getting the short end of the stick. but hopefully i wont have to get a completely new transmission, maybe i could just get it repaired, i dont know. the pan had significant damage and there was definitely some burnt up clutch residue in the remaining fluid.
