Which side? It could be an output shaft bearing

1st post states the noise is coming from the transmission area (OP stated he observed this while rotating tire by hand )

If so, time to visit a Transmission repair shop for a diagnosis.

Yeah, not the hub. Already changed 1 and it was a "grinding" sound. This is def coming from the center in the tranny area. Sound coming from the same on both sides. Might have to go to the transmission shop...dang, hate not being able to fix it myself....

I'll have to agree. I don't know the internals of this trans, but hearing a "whine" while rotating in one direction and not the other makes me think it might be a hard part inside the unit.
Dropping the pan would be the next step to see if metal is in there.

Ah, the out put shaft bearing is not near the hub, it's in the transmission were the axle shafts go into the transmission.
I agree with FMG , take it to a reputable transmission shop!

My 2011 HHR 2.4L is doing the EXACT same thing. I tried the brake in gear reving with same result. I'm pretty confident it is not the hub as well. The transmission cooler lines were failing so I changed them and the transmission oil filter, no shavings in the pan and no change in the noise. Really thought it might have been low fluid. Has anyone solved this issue? Thanks!!

why? When I commented it bumped it to the top. And it would alert OP if he’s still active.

You can continue on in this thread. No problem.
Is your passenger side output shaft seal leaking?

The OP hasn’t been back to the site since 2016. Even if he got an alert, he probably wouldn’t respond.
