I have worked on engine that connectors were filled with oil in governors on the 3406B PEEC engines. Alot.
This is the first "electronic" Cat engine.
I thought this would be a problem.
I talked to my company instructor about this. He told me there is no problem with that. He got that info straight from Cat corporate.
Now if water migrates up a wire, which it can, you have a connection problem.
You said ground.
In the video the person is measuring resistance of the only two wires in the CAN bus circuit.
He did find a module bad within the complete loop.

One of the wires is marked - and the other is marked +. The high speed bus is 2 wire the low speed bus is 1 wire
The process tells you between what points the problem is. Knowing that there are 120 ohm terminators makes it easy.
Oil and water migration does not make much sense, but several members have found oil had indeed travelled uphill to the ECM and TCM.

The whole CAN thing can make you crazy. In some ways it is like a home computer network, in others it is just a wire with + &- signals.

If you don't have a VCIM it is even easier.

I didn't believe water migration either until I saw it.
It was a Cat 3406E engine. There was a service letter from Cat about it.
Traveled from a water temp sensor to the ECM.
The fix was to replace the sensor, wire and terminal ends. If it showed signs of water entry at the ECM connection, replace that too.

Phantom no start again

Please forgive me, I know I started a thread on this awhile ago but really don't know how to find it.
2010 SS
Every once in awhile I have a no crank issue. It can take months for it to happen. And yes had two brand new batteries installed for this issue.
Today's experience.
Started up numerous times. Go out this afternoon with 75F outside temps and inside much warmer than that. Had the windows closed.
No crank signal/start.
With just the key on this what I saw:
I believe with the key on the RPD should light up, but it didn't.
No CEL,ABS and Traction light on.
Radio on had correct time and date and on the station I listen to.
DIC info
Trip mileage (A and B) ---- mi.
Oil life ---%
Coolant -40F
Gas gauge at max full reading and temp gauge at zero.
Installed my VOM and had a value of 10.9 volts.
Hooked my trickle charger up set for 10 amps and the meter showed the battery needed a charge at 15 amps.
It has been on charge for an hour and my VOM reads 13.6 volts still showing 10 amps.
Still no crank/start, will let it charge more and see if charger amps drop.
When it does start I won't have this problem for months.

So again what electronically could drain the voltage in a couple of hours like you had the headlights on ? (And no they weren't left on.)

Please don't say "check your grounds" or "are the wires chewed up by mice".

P.S.
If do get a jump from a vehicle, it's starts right up.
I can only think more amps than the trickle charger can put out.

Why?
No I haven't.
Tell me why my DIC has lines for certain values ?
I can understand when the thermostat stays open you can get no gauge reading and the DIC are lines.
How come I get lines for trip and oil life ?
That to me is a communication problem somewhere.

Update:
Went out my charger was at 5 amps and the VOM read 14.4 volts.
Turn the ket and the VOM dropped to 12.6 and no start,
Fuel gauge on full, temp gauge on zero. No communication that I see.

Have no one to help me if I need somebody to hold the key on and I wiggle wires, hit the starter or take values.
Again no codes.

Going to call Geico to give me a jump and see what happens.

Update #2
Waiting now for them now.

Click on your screen name at the top right of the page, choose "My Posts".

car running (charging) 14.4 is what the charger/alternator is providing. turn key then you get what battery is supplying. 12.6 is good.

I would be looking at the red wires on the under hood fuse box for tight clean connection.

No need for anyone to hold the key on, just turn to on. The start times out on it's own.

Thanks for that help.
I've done so and can't find my earlier post without going thru the list.
