Waterpump replacement woes
Thanks again. Mine is a 2.4 2006. So you think all I need to do is put in a new tensioner? Do you think I might have damaged the chain and gears? I have 80,000 miles-is it time to replace chain and gears, or do they last?
I am so unfamiliar with these new engines...Give me a SBC anyday

So you've still got that whine? Maybe run it for a minute without the serpentine belt. That would check the A/C compressor, alternator, and tensioner. If it still whines without that belt on, then you know it's internal.
For future readers, the whine is from the balance shaft chain tensioner over tensioned , it must be removed and reset, turn the plunger and push it into the tensioner, put a paper clip in the pin hole to hold the plunger, reinstall the tensioner and release the plunger.
This is why we insist, do not turn the crankshaft or the water pump in either direction as it will cause a problem.

I just rebuilt the 2.2 in my 08 LT. Put a new Gates water pump on it... Got it back together & I have a leak between the pump & the block.
I am envisioning an ugly/time consuming process to pull that pump... I assume that a special tool would be required to hold the sprocket in place & not jeopardize the balance shaft timing. Any links to this process? Any advice?

Trust me, pull the front cover off and release the balance shaft chain tensioner. Use something like a tywrap to hold the chain on the sprockets or remove the timing chain and retime both chains.

I wrote about the kazoo about a week ago and just discovered this post. The place I had the work done when the water pump, thermostat and serpentine belt kit was replaced is around 152 miles from my town, I'm in NV,... my question is whether it will be safe to drive it down there to have them fix the issue? There are 3 small passes that I have to go through, but I'm worried (a woman for you):). I have a 2011 2.2l LT with 123k miles on it. My whining (kazoo) sound comes from the front by where the radiator cap is, starts as soon as I start it up, and acceleration definitely increases the volume it produces. No check engine light, no overheating, however I noticed I couldn't get the radiator cap off the other day (I just thought to check it figuring why not), with a man unable to get it off either with just his hands. I didn't keep trying because I was already late to pick my daughter up. Any advice would be great for this newbie:). Thank you all for your time and help!
It’s gonna be loud but you should make it just fine , it’s their mistake so they should replace the balance shaft chain.
sometimes the plastic rad cap sticks and sometimes it gets put on cross threaded. Make sure it’s cooled off to ensure there’s no air pressure built up
