With a panel, it's usually pedestrians when you're backing up.

I'd say it is the fuel pump. Have your tank low on fuel when you take it in for diagnosis and repair. Not all parts work the same. You may just have a noisy one.
Has the noise been there since new or when did it start?
I've had several power steering pumps that were unusually noisy as well, especially on a hard turn or when not moving forward or backward.
Take it in and get rid of the annoyance.
Change your fuel filter within 500-1000 miles after replacement unless you have changed it recently.

Diskullman......I'm still chuckling ....Good One !!!

Fuel filter is not servicable on an HHR. Self cleaning set up.

Answer sort of already given. My thought was that your wife is in the rear seat, or possibly there is a body under the car. :)

Is the fuel pump in the tank? require them to drop the tank to replace?

One more thing.....can you hear it when the HHR is not moving but the motor is running??
If Yes it must be the pump.

Yes I can hear it more when I am at a stop light than while moving.....it is more noticeable inside the car...can't really hear it when outside...does that make sense?

How would I explain it to the service tech..I have a feeling I'll probably get "oh thats normal" or we don't hear anything. You need to move to New England CM

I hate to say it but the response from the Service Dept. can depend on whether it's a Warrantee issue or a case of you just pay for it.
Sometimes they will have a completely different attitude.
Thats not to say that is the case everywhere or under every circumstance but I have experienced this more than once over the years.
Some dealerships have a better policy in regards to how they value their customers.
If you get hassled at your dealership try another one. Thats what I have done and gotten well taken care of in the end.
When that happens, you might just want to buy your next car from them as well.
Dealers are a lot like Doctors. When you find a good one...stay with them.
