I think that the general public replacement battery has been manufactured and listed very recently, like since 10/2009. Believe it or not, parts lag is not a GM only problem, I generally do 50K miles a year, so a new vehicle needs parts before most; my last vehicle was a 04 Toyota Tacoma, nobody listed air or oil filters or brakes or shocks until around 07, even though Tacomas have not changed in 5 or 10 years. I am starting to find parts listed for the HHR recently, some places even admit to oil filters rear shocks and struts! without having to lie about the year and model.
At PEP Boys Bosch Battery sells for about $84, however, I think that is a fairly low CCA rating (400 if I remember right). Advance and AutoZone do suddenly stock also at around $89-$140.

I just had the Optima 34R (8003-151) installed at Advance Auto Parts. Their part number is 34-980. I couldn't use the side clamp because of the size difference, I just used the bolt to clamp it down, the front clamp worked fine and the battery is in tight.
These are the specs from the Optima site
Group 34R; Cold Crank Amps 800; Crank Amps 1000; Reserve Capacity 100; Ampere Hour 50; Top Terminal; L-10 in.; W-6 7/8 in.; H-7 13/16 in.
I have a 2008 SS, hopes this helps someone.

If you could post a picture of the install, that would be great !
Oh by the way...
My Delco OEM battery died today.
Since my HHR is an 07, and still under warranty, the dealer replaced it for free.
I didn't realize, when your battery dies on the HHR, you can open your tailgate.
I put a charger on the terminals under the hood, then once the battery held a charge the tailgate unlocked.
Then I was able to get a good jump from the rear and get the car started.

My Yellow Top Optima died after a month.
It worked fine until we did not start the car for several days over the New Year's Holiday. Average temp out doors was 20 degrees F.
So really it dierd after four days of non-use.
Giving it a trickle charge now.
I bought it new last year and did not need it until this year because we limped the OEM Battery along until it gave up one cold day. We have an '06 that has been on the road since Aug '05, so I figure the OEM did its job fine.
But now, I'm not sure what to make of the Optima giving out.
I just put an Optima Yellow in My Odyssey van and have no problems.
Perhaps it is the fact the HHR is not driven as much as it used to be? Now days it gets a 15 minute run in the morning, and another 15 minute run in the late afternoon. Sometimes more, but there are weeks where this may be all it gets.
I went with the Optima Yellow ( Deep Cycle ) because of the stereo and Nav upgrades. But perhaps a Red top would have been a better answer since I hear ( Via the Honda element Forum ) the Yellow tops need more time to charge than the reds. So our short trips may not be providing the needed restorative charging.
Just a theory, but it's all I've got unless something is wrong with our electrical system.
