It goes to the expansion tank on Cobalt. Can also be used as a bleeder valve.

So, why don't we have a hose connected to it? It must be blocked off on our engines such that coolant doesn't come out like in the Cobalts, Soltice and others I've seen used to bleed air out of the system by removing the hose.

I just figured it out! That is where the third leg of the air filter housing wold fit on a 2.2L; the one nobody can figure the correct size grommet.

The black stud is for the OEM airbox.
The silver bolt between the hose is the plug for the coolant system

And it looks even better, the SS has a longer neck, the "thing" is centered behing the pressure cap.

Well thanks for nothing guys.

Went out and snapped a picture of mine. Apparently I've got a little oil seepage
from the valve cover.
(But. May not have noticed the leak if not for taking the picture)
What that "thing" is, I now don't care because now I've got the oil leak to fix.
