No snow in Sacramento temp in winter maybe 30f a little frost in the morning, hot mostly in the 90s , you should drive hwy. 49 from Aurbun thru the gold country its the same as it was in 1849. enjoy.

As long as your car is not registered in California you do not need to smog it here. The smog is only required of a California registered vehicle. I never registered in California while I was stationed here until I got out of the service. Always remained registered in Florida, my home of record. Back then I had a 1983 Camaro Z28 with a 350 and headers with straight exhaust. I never had an issue. The laws are the same now as they were then. Keep your Ohio registration and you will be fine.

 

Be aware that there's a renewed push going on right now (budget induced for sure) by the CHP in cracking down on "foreign" registrations seen on the highways.

But there are certain exemptions for Military so I don't think they'll bother you if your vehicles have military base stickers on them, at least that was the case in the past. Do they still issue such stickers? I know homeland security issues have changed a lot of things these days.

 

When I moved from Texas to California, all I had to do was pass a smog test and get California plates on my car within 30 days. But, that was in '94. My non-California set-up was cleaner running than one set-up for California. Back then, out of state vehicles had to pay a higher registration fee for initial registration. But the Guva-nator repealed that when he became governor and the extra fee was rebated back to me. And because base stickers are no longer issued for military members for their pov's the cops will hassle you with those out of state plates, if you do something to make them notice you.
