I was suspecting the turbo or the dropped transmission gear but either one of those I would have been able to limp out of the road. Ill keep you guys informed once I hear from the dealer so u can get urs checked out if u want to. Any ideas what a new engine goes for?
The brakes didn't feel as effective because with a dead engine you had used up the vacuum to the power brake booster. The brakes will still work without vacuum, but will just be harder to push.
Using the emergency brake only engages the rear brakes. Not a safe way to stop a moving vehicle. Rear brakes only generate about 30-40 percent of the stopping power of the vehicle.

I'm trying not to sound like a smartass, but I understand perfectly well how brakes work. Used brakes and ebrake together. Holy Crap.

So I heard back from the dealer. The timing chain came apart, and took out everything else in the process. They don't know why it happened yet, but they are asking 9100 for a new motor and install. So I'm up in the air as to whether or not to fix it. What do you guys think?

BTW, There was a weird tapping/clicking noise corresponding to engine speed that morning. Something to watch out for if this starts to happen with one of you guys.

only my opinion

If you have the financial stability, fix it.....It is a Panel SS....pretty rare car. If it were me, I would probably have to sell it, or trade it in depending on the trade in value. You could "part it out" and start selling everything off of it until you have nothing left, too. Considering the rarity( and its a SS), a lot of the parts may be pretty valuable on here and ebay...

Sorry this happened to you, There are a lot of SS's that take a beating and keep on going.

Oh and it just dawned on me... You only put like 5,000 miles on that car... I'd be on the phone with the dealer you bought it from(customer service or who ever). Specially if you didn't tune it, or anything....

Yeah since you have only put 5k on it the dealer you bought it from hopefully will help. They may not though. But you are doing the right thing by trying them all. Be sure to keep mentioning the lack of time owned.

That $9100 seems very high but then this is a specialty type engine. Call around on that as knowing what others are charging may help you in the long run.

order the engine youself...

GM parts direct has the motor for around $3700.

Find a shop other than that dealer to do the instal and should be about $1500.

It will then be $5200-$5500 plus tax.

I got my car back yesterday from the Dealer that just put my engine in, they charged $1350 to put it in. That is a GM dealer too...

The new one will have 100K three year warranty too!

You could also get a used one with warranty for about $2000 then it would only be about $3500 once installed.

Sad to hear about this whole issue. This^ sounds like a tensioner or guide was "giving up the ghost". If the slack in the chain gets bad enough, the chain hops teeth and you end up with sudden catastrophic failure.

That's a great idea. Does anybody know any "trusted" dealers or shops in the burlington/Mount Vernon WA area, and also, does anybody have the part number for that engine?
