'09 SS oil leak

Ok guys and girls. I have my first oil leak. I have approx. 35,850 on my 2009 HHR SS - Auto. I noticed about a week ago when I park the car i am leaving about a quarter sized spot of oil on the ground. I took it to a mechanic I know and he said it should be covered under the 36k mile warranty and told me to take it to my dealer because it looked to him like the leak was coming from the oil filter housing. I took it in this morning and the dealer called to let me know they put dye in it and that I need to drive another 500-1000 miles and bring it back for them to find the leak. They told me it wouldn't be an issue since it was documented at less than 36,000 miles. What do you think? Am I safe going over that limit? What might be causing the leak?

Engine oil leaks are covered 5 years 100,000 miles on a 2009, as long as it's not the oil filter or drain plug.

If you have a "Black light" you can look for the leak, it will appear a glowing yellowish color..

Will do thanks. My HHR was rescued from an insurance auction with 6 miles on it. It has a salvage title as a result of a front impact accident that occured on delivery to the customer. I had the body work completed and it has run like new for over a year now. The dealership told me yesterday that since it has a salvage title they can't fix the oil leak under warranty but they would be glad to help me figure out what caused it. They did put the dye in it when they changed the oil.

So ChevyMgr, I guess I am SOL? My HHR was not flooded, it was simply wrecked. I had a body shop put a hood, headlights, front right fender, front and rear bumpers, and a radiator and A/C Condenser in it. Everything on the inside was in mint condition other than the driver side air bag, which was replaced. Am I better off just letting my local non-dealer mechanic find and fix the leak? Also, I had a recent oil change at a different dealer and my mechanic was telling me that it is possible that the dealership over tightened the oil filter and cracked the housing causing the leak. Thoughts?

Yes. Once it's reported salvaged all warranties are void, except recalls.

In the first post,he said the dealer implied it was covered because it was under 36000 miles. Hmmmm......This one could get interesting.
