A dealer *might* know of some common leak spots on this engine better than an independant mechanic but will probably charge more for a diagnosis. For the cost of the repair, maybe you ought to check with both? I also wonder if anyone here has experience with a good shop(or dealer) in your area. Wouldn't hurt to ask in the general problems forum so you can hear from non-ss owners too.

 

If it "looks wet" near the filter cap I wonder if it's just a bad o-ring..... It may not have been replaced with the last oil change (many of the filters come with a new o-ring, some don't)

 

Yeah I am a bit skeptical. Supposedly the engine tech was busy all day but came over for a few minutes and saw where oil looked like it was "seeping" from the engine block near the oil filter. They said they wont know for sure until I bring it back so the engine tech can call the "technical advisors" and go through the procedure they give him to determine if it's the block.

 

Isnt this the same leak from the cam button..it runs down the end of the head and makes the filter look like its leaking?

 

Hmm, I hadn't heard of that but that could be exactly it. What's the fix?

 

Ok, so my non-dealer mechanic has looked at the leak and says he too thinks it might be a porous block. He said oil is seeping right above where the oil filter sets. He checked the cam plug and there was no leak present there. So, I will take it back to the dealer on Wednesday so they can do the definitive tests that will tell me if it is truly a porous block.

If it is and I can find where it is leaking, does anyone recommend me trying to find some kind of sealer before I break the bank and have a whole new engine installed? If I have to get an engine where is the best place to get a good buy on one?

 

There's used salvage motors listed on car-part.com Maybe you'll be lucky and one is close to you, but it doesn't look like it.

 

Yeah I'm going to look. Also, what should I do with the old engine if I do take it out? I assume the components inside of it are in great condition as the car only has 36k miles on it.

 

Make for a great blender motor for those tailgate parties!!
