204,000= p0016

Well, I hit 204,000. on my 08 ss and it gave me a gift! It’s no throwing the dreaded P0016. I reset the engine light while driving, and it comes on again after it shuts off and is restarted. I monitor the timing while driving and it seems good. The car still seems to run great and I’m still getting about 30mpg at 80mph. I picked up this car used at 140k, I did check and it does have the new style tensioner. I guess I need to take the valve cover off and check the chain. Is there a way to electronically check the sensors? Does anyone know of a mechanic in the San Diego area, that likes to work on these?

I don’t know if this post is where it belongs.

thanks for your help in advance!

Welcome. It's been moved to the SS Specific Service Issues/Repairs, rather than the Performance thread.

Your other post in the classifieds asking for a mechanic has been deleted as you are already asking the same thing here (double posting).

You are pointed in the right direction already to suspect the timing chain, and or guides/tensioners. The OBDII system pretty much does all the checking needed for the sensors etc..

That's pretty high mileage, so the chains etc. are definitely suspect.

Now lets see if any knows of a mechanic in the San Diego area.

For your engine's (and your wallet's) sake, please do not try to start the engine again!

Welcome to the site, hopefully a member here from your area will chime in.
X2 on the Do Not attempt to start the SS, a broken chain or guide could destroy the engine.

Haha, it’s been like this for 5k miles. Thanks guys. Should spend the money on the chain, or get a new replacement engine from eBay?

Consider yourself very lucky - you've been driving it like that for 5K miles!!!! You might as well just wait till it grenades, then get a whole new engine since it isn't a priority for you, and the engine has a lot of miles on it already.

New engine! It’s probably out by one tooth or link but that is high mileage!

Mine ate itself because of timing chain stretch at 142K. Jumped 2 teeth and grenaded at highway speed. Hole in the oil pan and everything.

Thanks, all!
I found a mechanic here locally. He works at GM and is allowed to bring his own cars into work on them. Mine car went in and the chains are indeed stretched. All appear to be original, guess I got lucky so far. I’m going to provide parts to him and he’ll do the work. Does anyone have any experience with theses $99.00 kits on eBay? I would like to know you thoughts. Hopefully she’ll make it until next week sometime when all the parts are here.

thnanks guys! (People) I would want to often any CNN viewers.

They seem to be as good as any - just make sure the guides/tensioners are included, and that it is for the 2.0L turbo engine. At that mileage you might want to consider replacing the water pump and balance chains at the same time.
