FE1 or FE5 steering rack?

FE1 is soft ride...FE5 is sport. I don't race, I don't need to race, I don't need to take turns at 40mph, etc

Will FE1 work for an SS?

Looking at these 2 on rock auto

I can't seem to figure out how to link a rock auto part, so I'll copy and paste

1:

CARDONE 1G1814 Remanufactured; Includes Inner Tie Rods Info
with Soft Ride Suspension (FE1); Electronic Power Steering with Manual Rack

$165.00 shipped

2:

CARDONE 1G1815 Remanufactured; Includes Inner Tie Rods Info
with Performance, Handling Suspension (FE5); Electronic Power Steering with Manual Rack (Only 1 Remaining)

$210.00 shipped

OR should I just go with a NEW GM OEM FE3 for ~$250?

Uncertain if the steering rack is easy to service myself, or if it's even possible?

The SS has a different steering ratio than the LS and LT.
SS=14.8 to 1
LS,LT=18.5 to 1

Get the correct part.

So, it's easier to turn the base models? I knew I wasn't imaging things when the SS was harder to turn at the steering wheel.

besides the advantage of a higher ratio with the base model steering rack, is there any other advantages over the ss rack?

will it fit and work? Are there any other differences?

seems like you want a higher ratio on the bigger wheels to help turn them

The input shafts are different diameter and splines. Keep the SS to the SS . You can install the FE3 in the FE1 but not the SS .

Ok thanks for the info. I see on Rock auto that only the gm genuine have hearts next to them. I'm assuming this is one of the items I need to stick with OEM?

In the RA website I don’t see any genuine GM FE5 racks.

https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...nd+pinion,7388

Here was the correct part number for the FE5 rack, sadly also discontinued
