Looks like I might need a new cooling fan assembly...

...based on all the related threads I've scanned.

My SS never over heated until today when I saw the temp gauge higher than normal. So, I checked the DIC, and temp was 230 degrees. Once I hit the highway, the engine temp slowly decreased and stabilized at ~188-189; just to be sure and somewhat concerned, I had turned the heater on full blast even though it was ~80 ambient. When I got off on my exited ramp, the temp started to slowly climb during the mile or so of stop-and-go to get home.

Once home, I found that the fan was not running neither at high temp (219+ degrees) nor with the A/C on. Fuse is good. No relay on SS as far as I can tell. I plan to check the fan wiring in the morning, but, unless I find an obvious wiring/ground issue, I may need a new cooling fan assembly.

What say you? I always look to you guys to confirm what I think I know.

Regards,

Ron

P.S. I really enjoy driving my HHR SS, but it seems like I'm always fixing stuff, most significant to date includes the horrible GMTU sensor wiring, more recently a broken timing chain guide, and now a cooling fan??

Did you see this thread? They talk about bypassing the module as a test.

Thanks. I missed that particular thread in my haste, but was planning to use one of my jump starters to apply 12 volts to the fan motor.

Rock Auto has modules for $116 and complete fan assemblies with module for $159. So, it may be worth it to replace the whole enchilada except the fan assembly R&R would be more difficult.

I'll be back with the results...

Fan works. So, going for the $75 eBay control module. Doesn't skeer me in the least. All my cars are powered by eBay...

eBay fan control module arrived today. I installed it, and the HHR is back on the road again--Plug-and-Play. :thumb:
