Thumbs down Manual Trans go Boom

Today sucked. I am surprised traffic didn't get me hah.

I just got this car all put together after rescuing it and this happens. Just gonna jump right into the details of what it did last.

History:
Some whining, some difficulty getting into gears, especially 5th. Some "rev hang" where I have to let it fall a bit to get a clean shift.
I knew the trans was iffy and I needed to get into it at some point, but now it might have just grenaded.

What it did:
Left gas station, reached for second, started to let up on clutch BOOM, crazy bucking, stalled out.
Started it, managed to force it into 3rd, bumbled it to the shoulder. Stalled.
Got it started, now you cannot idle it with the foot off the clutch. It grinds and wants to stall.
Its sorta like the grind you get when you are forcing gears in, but its loud. Runs with clutch in, won't with it out.

So, I am going with the spring plate just exploded, or something inside the trans blew.

I know I am in for a yank and rehaul. Just wondering if anyone had a trans go, and what it was.
Do I get a clutch? pffft... I think I'll wait and see the damage... 😥

Sounds like the clutch has been talking to you for a long time.
I don't know how the trans could exhibit the symptoms you describe.

“Runs with clutch in, won’t with it out”
Well. That sounds like the pressure plate is still working. Until you pull it apart it’s hard to say if the clutch is the problem or the trans itself.
My bets on the trans based on the prior issues with it.

Yep, I think trans ate itself on whatever shaft rotates in idle. Horrible internal metallic noises when trying to let the clutch in. Used a bore scope to verify a clean clutch area. So yea. She blown.

Been looking into an F23 swap. Seems the cobalt folks like it.
