Smile Should I buy this turbo upgrade or not?

I've been thinking about buying Turbo upgrade if i can do it for around $1000.00 and I found this one on eBay and made an offer for less money than listed. Listed on ebay was $979.00, i offered $850.00 and it was accepted, which makes me wonder if i could have gone lower and is it really worth it.

Or should I contact a chevy dealer for the GM turbo upgrade and have them install it, if that's possible these days?

Not really sure about that one. I did notice that the BPV cover is the factory stock one so I doubt it has an upgraded BPV.
Also noted is this from the ad: *This turbo ugrade will work on an otherwise stock vehicle. However, ECU tuning and supporting mods will be necessary to exploit the full potential of this turbo (or any other larger than stock turbo)*
So, you will need a good tune to go with that turbo. You won't be able to use the new turbo without one.

I'd be leary of any ebay turbo. Especially one marked Stage 4 K04...there was a group over at CSS trying to change impellers and guts out. I'm pretty sure they proved it to be a mute point.

If you're going to spend that kind of money on a gamble, do yourself a favor and look at the ZFR turbo from ZZP.It's proven, reliable, and a direct bolt on.

Good turbos aren't cheap and cheap turbos aren't good. Kinda like everything else.
-my 2 cents

I called my local Chevy dealer yesterday and asked about the turbo upgrade kit for my 08 HHR SS and the person looked it up on his computer and said they could do it and it would be $740 and that includes installing it.

So I go into the dealer and one of the shop guys(I think the manager), said he doesn't like doing upgrades like this on older cars, he would be afraid of a seal or something breaking and then having to do warranty work on it. And then told me there are upgrades that are available from other people.

I was extremely pissed off but didn't say anything, I guess my money is no good to them.

Maybe I should try another dealer?

The dealer kit is 2 sensors, and a tune. You're better off buying the 3Bar MAP sensors and getting a tune. It would be better than the Stage 1.

GM Stage 1 Sensors - Electronics

Any tuner with HPT and knowledge of the LNF will be able to get you setup. I will stress, they have to know the LNF not just any tuner! Our little engines are pretty finicky. I'm currently trying to setup my business with Remote tuning. But with my traveling, it's going to take some time.

Here's a good thread for you to read Kelly, we discuss the different tunes in detail.

I didn't realize that the GM upgrade was so lack luster, so I just sent a message to HPtuners to see if my HHR SS is compatible since I have been having trouble getting my car tuned as well. Link to my troubles of getting a tune.

I think the tuning problem may be because I have an A/T automatic transmission.

Thanks to all for the info :)

The GM kit is no slouch it adds 55hp and 80tq(stock 235hp 260tq tuned 290hp 340tq) to the Auto SS. Increases horsepower up to 290 @ 5,200 rpm and torque up to 340 lb.-ft.

It's quite a difference and you can get a plug in kit for the sensors, which are easy to swap, so all the dealer has to do is the tune. I added the Trifecta tune on top and she flies. :)

Just to be correct. The numbers for the HHR SS GMTU would be 290hp, 315tq.
(that 340tq only applies with the Soltice, Sky or another. Can't remember the exact model )

Cool I just pulled the numbers from one of the sites. Forgot the HHR was a little low on TQ
