SS is Down Again

Well, after my $4200 top end rebuild (thank you warranty) 3 weeks ago, the SS is down again. Driving home from GA on Sunday, it began to bind up. Wouldn't shift into gear or out correctly every time. Sometimes it was like butter other times it was a struggle.

Took it back to the dealer yesterday. They called me and said I need a new master cylinder. Woohoo! Warranty covers that so I'm good, right?

NOPE

They won't replace the master cylinder unless I let them replace the flywheel as well. This is not covered. I'm thinking it would be about $400 or so. They want $2800 to do the flywheel only.

I'm picking it up, ordering a new master cylinder from RockAuto for $30, and taking it to a local mechanic to have them install it for $175. I don't think I have a flywheel issue at all. They are just trying to recoup money fromthe last warranty claim.

Hopefully, I have it back on the road in a couple weeks.

Are you sure they said "master cylinder" not "slave cylinder". The slave in inside the flywheel housing, so I could almost understand some of that. The "master" is on the firewall and is a hassle to get to, but nowhere near the "slave".

I was wondering why the flywheel would need to be changed with a master cylinder....

They said Master. I couldn't figure out the connection either. What little I know about transmissions, the flywheel wouldn't cause the binding and the soft pedal. That says pressure or lack there of, to me.

They said the flywheel is an $1100 part, plus labor to go into the transmission. They would then warranty the work to change the master cylinder "on the firewall".

Like I said, they are trying to pull one over on me I believe....

Try another dealer, no matter how far away, it would be cheaper to get a cab back & forth.

Well, since they "diagnosed" it, they are going to charge me I'm sure. With the diagnosis, I am just going to order the part and take it to the local mechanic that does some work on my old truck for me.

Even with their diagnosis fee, I believe I will still be out less than they say just the warrantied amount would be for the master cylinder only (about $400+labor).

Flywheel is covered by power train warranty. Are you still under power train?

Well that's interesting. The flywheel is covered but the clutch isn't covered by the powertrain warranty? Am I understanding that correctly?
