Chrome wheels: Can you paint over them?

Better yet....can i? Is it worth the time to do so I can paint them Gunmetal. Super heavy sand paper or another route? And someone mentioned that the wheels have chrome coverings (over the wheels) but are still metal (if that makes sense to you then you win prizes).

Are these the polished wheels or the actual chrome clad wheels? The chrome clad is plastic.

I've actually seen ones from a Silverado they broke the plastic off and had them powercoated, actually a nice look wheel after.

Solman-Not sure but I will find out.

Officer1151-That's the kinda answer I was looking for! Is your reasoning due to the difficulty behind sanding them or elsewhere?

I personally think it would be an awful lot of work for a very mediocre result. I've seen far too many home painted wheels that looked like home painted wheels. There are lots of decent looking after market wheels out there that won't break the bank. Just look around.

If they are damaged, scratched up, peeling, etc. etc. then why not..... If they are clean, chrome in good shape, then WHY???

And yes.... what solman said... are these polished alloy or chrome clad. That would make a difference in procedure if you were to do it.

There is also a wheel tint to achieve a black chrome look.... have you thought about that? If done right it may look less "home made" than a painted gunmetal but really for wheels powder coat is the way to go. Paint tends to not last very long.

Partially, I've heard its a P.I.T.A. to get it done right.. but also, if you have chrome, someone else would likely be glad to take those rims off your hand so you could buy some that more fit your idea of what you want.. I had once thought of doin' similar, but ended up getting a new set of rims..

I have a friend that worked in a paint shop with his father that did some rims for me back for my camaro that worked out great. I was going to him for these as well.

I don't like chrome but was going to buy a set that I thought looked good for their price and paint gunmetal (or black) because I prefer the look over Chromeness.

I haven't heard of the tint look. I may just keep my eyes out and hope for something else to come across that I can paint easily or get the gunmetal right away. Horray stuff!

If he's got an '07 and those are factory 17" they are not chrome.... They are Polished Alloy and clear coated. If this is the case, sell'em don't paint them.
