Goodyear Assurance Triple Tread

Hi All - At the risk of sounding like I have a large arthropod lodged in my rectum, I faithfully submit the following:

I just bought this new (to me) DD. An '07 HHR LT2. I bought it from a dealer lot which I usually avoid like the plague. But the two big reasons I closed the deal were the car fax (one owner, 17 service entries, all work done at the delivering dealer including brakes, wheel bearings, oil changes, coolant flush, trans service - EVERY single thing. Who does that???), and the other reason ... the 4 almost new Goodyear Assurance Triple tread tires. Almost $1000 if you buy these things from the local tire dealer. It appeared to me that this car was well taken care of!

But the tires - while looking great, I have some concerns. First, they kinda suck in snow. We got a 2" accumulation of some wet slushy snow and this thing couldn't even safely pull out of the sub. It spun the tires, wouldn't turn, each time I gassed it, it would spin and head for the right ditch. I see a lot of HHR loyalists buy dedicated snows. Is this just a characteristic of the car?

And the noise. These things are horrible. The tread seems pretty flat, not cupped, feathered edges, etc. It seems like 2 tires are noisier than the other 2, so I rotated them to the back and that helps a little. But in 10,000 miles, they gotta come to the front. And then ... I can't even imagine. The noise is way louder than a trashed wheel bearing.

Does anyone else have these tires? Similar issues? Any experience with Goodyear and their policy on this problem?

MD

OOps them are the general G-max , the DWS were so long ago they are on my old puter, sorry. I had a set of Goodyears separate a belt on two of them at 17000 miles. Goodyear gave me 400.00 back. Used it to buy these.

Yes, I bought a set last fall- one size bigger than oem. The first thing I noticd was the NOISE! Then they are Stiff shouldered. I actually looked into different springs to soften the ride.

I wish that I had never bought them....One of my few big mistakes that I admit to! I never had them in snow, The car is in storage till spring ( 2 more weeks)

Not sure if this may be typical for the HHR, but I'm running the second set of these exact tires on my wife's car, a Ford Taurus X, and have been pretty happy with them. They work decent in all weather conditions, including snow. Obviously they don't quite handle like a snow tire, but for my wife's driving style they are fine. I have never really noticed them being noisy either. I guess ride quality is a very personal thing, but maybe the vehicle is a big part of the issues you're describing...If they have decent tread left, I'd go to a tire place and see what kind of trade-in they offer and get something else. Don't count on getting more than 75-100 bucks per tire though.

The HHR road noise was a test review complaint..seems the road noise carries thru to the interior fairly easy..also depends on your roads..when i was on the right coast the noise wasnt too bad..now that I'm on the left coast the roads are like running on gravel, the noise is crazy! same tires both places ( not same as yours).

Every one complained about the OEM Fire hawks. Mine rode good, handled well, and hydroplaned like crazy! Thats why I replaced them with the goodyears and in their defense they don't hydroplane...I've just got way too much money in them to change now. and I only have 20k miles on the car. But it's not as much fun to drive any more.

Generals

SS Fan - the tread pattern on those Generals look sweet. Very similar to the GYTTs. I'll bet they're good in heavy rain with that siping.
