Why was I thinking I had a 2010? It was a 2011. My memory sucks.
I modify my statement: Some 2010 and all 2011 need the tool. They changed it sometime in 2010 before the 2011 MY started.
The stupid reason given is that if you are on a GM dealership lot and try to reset the positions on one car there is a possibility that other cars will respond. I guess they don't trust the rolling codes for the fob since that is the only way to get the RCDLR into learn mode, besides with a scan tool.

I got a $14 tool on eBay that relearned the wheel sensors.i replaced all 4 and originally it wouldn't recognize them at all. I activated learn mode and followed the lights around the car. Now they all work perfectly.
I put new sensors in a few months ago. Used the key fob method. They worked but would give errors about 30 minutes into driving it. Even messing up the others. And it was random. 2 rear...one front...1 front...etc. It went away after a while and they all work great. No idea what I did...i even went on a long drive recently and had no issues.
