IMO snow tires are worth their weight in gold. I live in Buffalo and swear by them. My HHR-SS will get steel rims and snows in a few weeks. My wife's 10 year old Honda with 5 year old Blizzak's kept up with my 4wd Jeep just fine until the depth was 6" or more. The other bonus is that your summer tires will last longer than you want them to.
Bit of a pain in the A$$ but for where I live, worth it.
