i still recommend if drivin in snowy areas- that get as good tyres as you can for winter;
and for summer months change cheap whatever type available- as long as those have like more than 3mm tread left…
I always grease all joints (replaced them with moogs with grease nippled) and check brake pads and shoes when changing tires.

I’m currently running BF Goodrich Advantage T/A, mainly because the previous owner had recently replaced two but the other two were pretty much shot. I have the stock 215/55/16 and I wanted to stay with that size as a good balance between ride, handling durability and of course price or cost. Even on my other vehicles I’ll accept the trade off between handling and ride and go with a smaller profile except for my Camaro. Not the cheapest tire but not unreasonably expensive either.

We haven’t had a lot of snow yet but the little we’ve had the tires performed well. We have had a lot of rain and they’ve done very well, even through unexpected standing water. Handling has been surprisingly good, especially with the new suspension components.

For what it's worth

My wife's 2006 LT sounds like a small drum band is in the back seat! I finally bit the bullet to tune of $671.44 got 4 BR Goodrich Tiger Paws II Toiuring All Season tires. One place quoted me $908 for same 4 tires! These have a huge mileage rating like 60,000 and are 95 rated and H rather than V. She's happy...I think these ride smoother but on Macadam roads still make a lot of noise. Original owner used car now has 124,800 miles, bought at 107850 and have lots of paperwork. Radio sound control and sound deading material is all I have left. My Buick Encore 2016 on Contential rides like a dream compared to HHR. The costs and trouble finding 4 used 16" rims was not in the game. BJ's Tire Department gave best deal.

years ago I had Tiger Paws on my Plymouth mini-van and they did not work too well. I almost sold the vehicle because it handled so poorly in the rain. I switched to Michelin's and it was a completely different vehicle. I seem to have stayed with Michelin's ever since. They cost a bit more but you can find deals on them and they do ride and perform nice. Hopefully they have improved the Tiger Paws (II) and they work well for you.

My 2006 has Michelin snow on it right now, I got a set of 4 with rims for $600 with one year use on them. They handled this crazy winter good. 16" rims and going back to the 17" for the summer, if it ever stops snowing...

maybe the noise is a wheel bearing?? just a thought..

Nothing drives an owner’s satisfaction more than tires.

My Pirelli P7 all-seasons (not on the HHR, Buick LaCross, I wanted comfort, did my research) are even quieter and gentler than the Michelins they replaced, sticky in corners, great in rain and snow. We can whisper conversation in the cab. Couldn’t be happier. Cost a little less than the Michelin too, icing on the cake.

I have the single-ply sidewall for softest ride, there is also an XL two-ply sidewall variant for better cornering response at the expense of ride (availability may depend on the size.) Tire Rack lists your size in XL only. I’m in market for 17” for my HHR LS also, may pull the trigger on that.

These Vredesteins look interesting too, glowing reviews.

The Cooper tires I bought used last fall have 80% thread left, run great and straight and quiet, cost me $350.00 CDN with 2LT 17” polished forged aluminium 2006 rims. I’ll run these another summer or 2 and either replace the tires or sell the rims and change the look of the BlackSwan.
I spotted a set of 18” steelies, would be very cool painted red, vintage cream, or carbon flash metallic, with baby moons , maybe.

People are talking about all-season tires like they’re all the same in snow. They aren’t. Some carry the “3-peak snowflake” stamp, meet standards for Winter use.
