trying to fit 5x112 wheels....

So here's the deal....

We sold my wife's passat, but kept the wheels and some other parts off of it. Until we figure out what we want to do for a vehicle, my parents gave us their 08 hhr ls to use. It's in desperate need of tires... the Texas heat has baked the stockers.

The passat wheels are super nice... 3pc 17x8 or so... Et of around 35... 235/40/17 rubber.

I was actually able to get the front wheel to mostly bolt up... even though the wheels are 5x112 and the hub is 5x110. The hub bore on the wheels is 57.1 (I think that's it) and stopped the wheels from sitting flush.

I'm just trying to figure out what people have done in situations like this... i have no issue getting the backside of the wheel machined out to clear the hhr hub... but

spacers?
Adapters?
Wobble bolts?

Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

OMG!!!! Is that the new wheels shown you have mounted? Take those wheels off right now and put proper sized wheels on. They are 110 as you know, not 112MM. You trying to kill yourself? Sometimes I wonder why I even bother with items like this.

Sorry to vent - but what you are doing is outright dangerous.
Take them off now if you are actually attempting to drive with them on.

No apologies for sounding harsh.

Whoa whoa whoa.... calm down. It never left the spot it's parked in. I was lucky to get 3 turns of the lug nut. I was born at night... just not last night.

To second whopper, don't pass "Go", don't "Collect $500", and please oh please look into properly designed adaptors/spacers

There are adapters out there that will allow using rims with a 5X112mm bolt pattern or HHR's with our peculiar 5X110mm pattern.

A quick Google search came up with these...

5x110 to 5x112 Wheel Adapter 1.25 inch items in Discount Wheel Adapters store on eBay!

Whopper's reply wasn't meant to belittle your intelligence, but just to clarify what you were planning and the right way to go about it.

We haven't lost a member in an accident, and we'd sure hate to ever have it happen.

One note about spacers, you will become "best buddies" with your torque wrench. They require frequent retorquing of both the spacers and the rims, some manufacturers recommend checking the torque after 100 miles, then every 250 miles thereafter.

Phew - Man I was worried worried worried that you cinched them up and went riding.

Thanks for getting back and clarifying - man you almost gave an old man a heart attack!!!

To add to 843de's comments/suggestions - you MIGHT be able to get them redrilled with a 110 pattern - there was a member here a couple of years ago that was looking into it. ahhhh found it - (courtesy of the most awesome Search Tool :)..) - https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/tire...-needed-41322/ there are links or descriptions to places that can do it in the thread.

I just would not trust spacers due to the torqueing issues as 843de mentioned - but others think they are just fine.

Oh, and WELCOME!!!!! Really - Welcome. Nice wheels BTW.

My opinion. Sell or trade your rims and get the correct size for the HHR.

Safety should come first.

While adapters like the ones linked above will work for the mounting situation, note the thickness of those things. They are 1.25" thick which would put even a factory 42mm offset rim out past the edge of the fenders. Your rims are 35mm offset which is another just over 1/4" wider on top of that.

My suggestion would to be to look around for set of used tires. You should be able to get them installed for similar price as it will cost you for the adapters.

Also those tires are 1" shorter than the factory size HHR tires and will throw the speedo off a decent amount if that is any concern to you.

Bingo 07!

You hit on the biggest drawback to spacers/adaptors, and I feel kinda dumb for forgetting it. They can utterly and completely screw up your offset, and cause interference issues with fender lips etc.

Good catch 07!

And to the forum soncjet! Forgot my manners too, yesterday sure was a Monday.

Those wheels are nice and all but unless you plan to do a hub swap there's no way to make those things work unless you plan to put a set of fender flares on to compensate for the extreme poke you'll have running adapters.
