I have Monroe struts on my HHR now, the clearance seems to be the same as stock but when you are pushing the limit on clearance it could be the difference between rubbing and not rubbing. One more thing on the struts, I couldn't turn the OEM struts, the bearing in the mount that allows the strut to turn when you steer was completely frozen on both of them, that was porbably putting a little stress on some of the steering components.
My struts are new and are NAPA Quickstruts. I was able to fit .230" worth of feeler guages into the gap between the strut and the corner of the tire. Here are some photos:

No problem with clearances at fender wells. Plenty of room at rear and about .750" at front.

I had these same Yokohama tires on my old Focus and was so impressed with them I had to have them again on my HHR.

Thanks for the info and pictures! That helps with choosing different size tires and also the NAPA Quick Struts are the same as the Monroe struts, Monroe supplies NAPA with thier suspension products so I know that a 215/55 will fit on my car.

Thanks for posting your pics. Looks good.. The Yoko Avids are 26.3" tall & you say you have .230 clearance between strut plate & tire.. That just fits..
not quite 1/4" clearance.

Edit: It was the sumitomos that are 26.5" tall (my bad)..

I'd say (from this info) one would have to make sure any other tire specs are no taller than 26.3

I have 225/50r17's Nexen 5000's on 17 x 7.5 ADR wheels with no problems at all. The nexens are wearing great, and handling is much better than stock.

Good luck,

The ramp (or lack thereof) at the end of my driveway gave me fits with other cars. In fact this HHR is the only car I have owned that does not cause tire rub and with the taller profile has eliminated the chin scrape. I do agree that other tire brands in that size may have a different edge profile so buyer beware.
Having said that, I had a 93 Taurus SHO that I bought aftermarket Mille Miglia rims with some slightly oversize tires. You could barely place a quarter edgewise between the strut spring perch and the tire yet I never had an issue like the GTOs did.

I believe that since these 215/55/17 Yoko Avid Envigors have a tread width of only 6.5"
That is what really helped on clearance..

" tread width of only 6.5" "

That's awfully narrow.... I mean it'll work fine if that's what someone's after but it's like a bicycle tire next to my Goodyears and they aren't necessarily wide.
