what tire size
1LT has 16", 2LT has 17"
Agreed.
One of the main benefits of lowering is to get rid of fender gap. Running a shorter tire after only brings it back.....

Exactly solman, smaller diameter tires would just negate lowering it in the first place. If an even lower stance is desired it might be time to look into bagging it, but maybe not as extreme as lunchbox's setup....he's got to get hung up on cigarette butts and gum wrappers.
OK so you have the 17" stock 2LT rims, that means you're probably running 215/50/17 tires right now. So if you go from the stock size to say a 225/40/17, you'll have tires that are 1.4" shorter that what you're running.
Since you're looking to close up the fender gap, going from a stock tire that is 25.5" tall to one that is only 24.1" tall will open the fender gap even more, although it will lower the vehicle.
You may want to think about going the other way to a taller tire like a 245/45/17 which will fit your rims and fill in the fenders a bit more.
Here's a link to a tire size comparator that a bunch of us use here to figure out tire sizes and overall diameters.

The most important thing to remember is that you can't fit tires with an overall diameter larger than 26", if you do, the inner sidewall will hit the lower spring perch on the strut.
