Exclamation Wheel cover nuts

This is a stupid question to ask, but I am hopeing someone might have a suggestion. My HHR has the chrome wheel covers that are attached to the steel wheel lug nuts. I have lost two covers in a year. I have tighten those stupid plastic caps with my fingers, and they keep loosing up. I have tried tightening the caps with a socket as to not strip them, and after a couple days they are loose again. Has anyone had this same problem? Just a thought, could I put some king of a thread lock on them before tightening them? I would appreciate any ideas

I don't know why they would be coming off on you, but instead of buying something expensive like Loc-Tite, you could get yourself a cheap bottle of nail polish. Put a drop of polish on the threads of a couple of the "nuts" on the wheel covers and they should stay in place for you. You can buy a cheap bottle of polish for $1 or so.

Hey pdmorris1,

Yes some of my HHR lug nuts on my hubcaps are in the same situation as yours. Half of them are even missing on each hubcap due to the previous owner. I actually took a cap off the other day to test something and i took off a lug nut from the hubcap. The lug nut was cracked and part of it was broken. So basically my guess is that at one point they were fastened too tight and it cracked. Ebay or Amazon may sell the lug nut fasteners on the hubcaps, you could try there?

BTW-I do still have a set of wheel covers available from my 2010 1LT for sale if you're wanting to replace yours.

You can get the plastic retainer nuts from a GM dealer or eBay or Amazon. At the dealer they are less than $4 ea IIRC.

Solved

I put a small amount of clear silicone adhesive on each of the Lugnuts, and then replaced the wheel cover only hand tightening the plastic caps . They have stayed tight for over two weeks so far.
