I was never thrilled when my service manager handed me a set of these to install in some kids used Camaro or Rustang! Most times the gauges and labour to install cost more then they paid for the car! 
I always would remove these from any used car I purchased.

Same here , it’s the paint rubbed away from the belt when it’s pulled out and retracted

There are 2 wires under the red plastic cover, one to the battery and the other goes down to the starter. 
There’s a wire that connects to the power steering, you can see it just to the left .

That usually gets tossed with the old part . 
Careful removing it , at this age it’ll be brittle.

The ignition switch holds all the positions within the switch 
ACC , RUN and Start. A push to start button would simply replace the existing start temporary function of the switch.
