Rear doors won't open from inside
This is interesting. I used the search function and didn't find anything like I am experiencing.
2008 HHR, neither rear door will open from the inside. The position of the child lock makes no difference. Both doors open from the outside with no problems.
One aside, the passenger rear door lock was acting up, it would take 8-10 pushes on the fob to get the door unlocked. The lock would move just slightly with each push on the fob.
I replaced the lock motor going by the write-up in this forum and it works perfectly now! It took me about 45 minutes. The motor was $11 delivered from the Ebay seller.
I'm stumped about the doors not opening though. I use the car for work, I'm the only person in the car. Over the weekend we used the car on a trip and my wife got stuck inside as my daughter and I are outside rolling our eyes because she was taking forever to get out of the car. It was funny.

A bit odd for both sides to act up simultaneously, but anything is possible, and I might have an idea as to what's going on.
Since you've already had one inner door panel off you know the drill, so give the following thread a read and check out post #127 specifically.

While you may not have a textbook case of latch "preloading", checking the operation of the internal components should turn up the cause even if it's just a lack of lubrication.
