Dealerships reluctant to install GMTU!!!
Well my cold side charge pipe is not stock as you can see. the pipe is not able to be moved at all so making a bracket like SSfan and firemangeorge was out of the question. Fabbed the lower radiator brackets "3/4 longer than the stock mounts to push it out more towards the front. these mounts will work with stock IC, ZZP ic, and possibly Hahn ic. If one was to use these brackets with a stock cold side charge pipe, yopu would also need to trim off the anit-rotation lip on coldside pipe to allow sensor to be rotated 180 degrees. Basically i just moved the lower portion of the radiator out "3/4.
Ok thanks fireman I appreciate the input. I agree. I'll just take it to my local dealer. I called chevy of montebello this morning and they said it will about 200 to install so I'm gonna go with them.
OK. I had a dealer install mine and this was their 1st one. Simply put, the job is just swapping out the sensors( a couple screws and plugging in the wire harnesses) and reflashing the computer. Very easy to do.
The reflash might be time consuming, if the link up with GM has any issues.
As far as a PITA. The labor intensity is about as easy as it gets.
$500? They have lost their minds. Take it somewhere else.

So, I'm resurrecting this older thread to see if anybody in Southern California has had any luck finding a dealer that will install the GMTU kit? I've had the kit for a while and I recently had my HHR in for some service. I wanted them to install the kit, but they didn't want to. They said even though it's a GM product, it's a performance product and they weren't comfortable with that, guarantee, etc. There's a part of me that thinks maybe they don't want to install it because I didn't buy it from them. I could do the physical install, but I don't have the means to flash the ECM. Any recommendations on a SoCal dealer?
Thanks
Mark

A) the techs dropped out of the same high school you went to
B) you did not buy it from them
C) if you buy a "tune" from a 3rd party supplier like CJ you don't need to worry about the flashing because that's what a "tune" is.

The kit includes the sensors, sensor connectors, crimp connectors a couple of stickers and the information the dealer needs to get the new tune which has the correct configuration for the new sensors. If you install the sensors you won't have the correct config for the sensors. If the car runs at all it will be very poorly and will set a number of CEL codes. I don't remember if the wiring diagram comes in the kit or not. I had it done on mine, I had to go back and solder the connections because I was having issues. My suggestion is to find someone in your area that can install the sensors alter the sensor configs and do a tune at the same time. A number of LNF people have done that. They have found that the original base tune has less nanny features in it and works better. It will probably cost that same amount if a dealer does it or a tuner does it.
I use HP tuners, you go could go to the forum GM L4, I5, I6 Tuning - Engine and see if anyone is near you that can help you out, or CJ as donbrew suggests.
FWIW, I took my original tune out and flashed my stock tune back in before I had the dealer do the conversion. The tune that was installed was nowhere near as good as the one I had in it. Solder the connection don't use the crimp connectors, make sure the lower sensor is not rubbing or hitting anything.

The cut and splice method was used on the original GMTU kits. The plug in harness' has been available for a couple years now. If you get a kit, you should get the newer version with the plug ins.
Wasn't aware of that. I got mine in 2008 when they first available. I know there were a number of issues at first not to mention the wiring information was incorrect. If that is how they are shipping them now that shouldn't be an issue.
They actually are available either way. Some still sell the old original. Crate Engine Depot is the one that came out with plug in harness.
There's an extra cost for the harness. About $100 I believe. I got one of the 1st kits they offered with the harness and got the harness for free.

The kit I have came from Crate Engine Depot. It has the short adapter harnesses, so I don't have to do any crimping or soldering. I just need to find a dealer who will do it. Foxtrotraptor mentioned Chevy of Montebello as a dealer that said they would do it. This thread is a few years old and he never chimed back in to say they did it and there weren't any issues. The local dealer I went to actually has a classic car show on their lot once a year, so I thought they would have no problem doing it. I'll try making a few calls today. Thanks for the input.
