To GMPP the SS or not? That is the question.
at 23,000 miles on the SS I need to make a decision within the next month (for the lower price) on whether to buy a GM protection Package.
While the only problems were with the Onstar module connections and a dead battery. I am concerned that something may develop down the road.
Since I roll about 10k miles a year
The price for Major guard is 4 yr 40k for $805
5yr 50k for $1180
6yr 60k for $1480
slightly cheaper with a $100 deductible.
or should I check into the Value Guard?
looking for opinions, since i usually do not buy extended warranties but I prefer to be safer than sorry with the vehicle.

Put the Turbo upgrade on and bank the rest of the money. Adds are you will never need it.
Extended warranties are bets that something will or will not go wrong that cost more than the price of the warranty. This is a case where the house wins most of them. Often when something does go it is less than the warranty.
I used to buy the warrantry and finally figured the odds. I also was covered as I could afford any repair if needed anyway.
It just comes down to look at the odds what make you sleep better at night.
Remember what expensive issues that some SS have seen most are covered under the 5 year 100,000 mile warranty. Most other non powertrain issues are generally much less than the cost of the warranty.
Just the way I play it and at this point I am ahead enough to afford a couple major issues and still be ahead.

I bought the GMPP warranty up front so it added like $10 to my payment. Since I was buying one of the first off the line it was peace-of-mind if nothing else. I doubt I would buy one after the fact where I had to pay up-front (and they are more expensive after initial purchase too).
I'm about to hit 50k and I have yet to need my GMPP....the powertrain warranty has taken care of everything.

Your extra protection might not be a bad idea, it seems that most of us are experiencing worn out swaybar bushings, after the 36K. Some are even having the steering shafts replaced for clunking as well. The question is is extra coverage worth it? In my case I'm upgrading parts as they wear out, and an extended service won't cover what I'm doing, so I didn't go with it. Now if they offered an extended warranty on body dings, dents, and scratches.... I'd have two!
I guess the best way to think of an extended warranty is that you are pre-paying for the repairs if you eventually need them. In my opinion the only time any extended warranty deal is worth the expense is if you end up having a catastrophic failure that is covered. If you say pay for the $805 plan and a year from now you have a $3,000 failure that's covered, great. If you have that same plan and over the four years you have a $100 repair that's covered, well you just over paid by $705, its a gamble. Yes HHR's do have some dependability issues at times, but that can be said of any vehicle. Myself, I'd rather keep the money in the bank, but you have to do what makes you feel secure.

and Hyper, I already have the Turbo Upgrade :)
You're right, it is hit or miss. I bought an extended for my wife's G6 the day the warranty expired (saved 40% buying on-line). A/C crapped out the next day! Repair cost was more than the warranty so I made out......
Same here. The two times I've bought the warranties they've paid off. My wife's SRX has inhaled the cost of that warranty a couple of times over.
I too am considering one for my SS. However, it doesn't have 12-way wireless chrome plated license plate bolts that communicate with the heated seats like the SRX does. HVAC, steering and bearings are the ones that come to mind but for the cost I don't think I will get the money back.

well that is why i didn't buy it to begin with because it starts the day you purchase it. so basically your losing the first 3 years and 36k miles because the factory warranty covers it. If i bought a 5yr 50k now it would be covered till 2016 and 73k miles. plus I wouldnt be paying interest on the warranty tied in with my payment. If i don't the powertrain will be over in 2013

The bottom line is I see many people pay for these and only a few collect on claims larger than the warranty. It is a money maker for GM and dealers.
But it make some feel more secure if they fail to keep money in the bank.
For me and the cars I have owned over the last 25 years. I am way ahead on not buying the warranty. The 5 year driveline covers what I worry about the most.
