I'm gonna get cold air into this motor or else!
I'm not fording rivers... so you're talking about very little moisture making it into a 4.5" diameter hole set on the horizontal. Once the water is in there, it's now got to figure out how to defy gravity as it travels up to the engine compartment, only to face the gatekeeper... the air filter. If water sufficient to damage the motor gets through all of that, please call a tow truck for me, as I'm probably parked in a pond.
i would be willing to bet that water will make it to the filter no matter what you do. if it gets wet it should keep most of it out. i have just a cone filter in the middle of the engine bay and it gets wet when i drive in rain. that may be because there is some metal missing. mine still runs so i think that as long as you dont completely soak the filter it will be ok.
Highly improbable. Folks, you're talking about the "magic bullet theory" all over again. The water will have to travel approx 3 feet of snaking tubing that travels UP the engine bay. Water doesn't do that very well... especially the anti-gravity part.
