2.2 verses 2.4

i know this has probably been discussed somewhere on forum, but i need some input

i currently have a 2006 with the 2.4 motor, 5 speed manual tranmission.......i am looking at buying a new 2011, but i can only find it with a 2.2 motor with the 5 speed manual.

i do alot of camping with 2 peopl, 2 kayaks, 2 bikes, and the cargo area loaded to the max with coolers and gear...

can anyone tell me how much difference i will notice with the new smaller motor,, lots of highway driving, but it gets hilly usually when i get near the camping areas

i use the car as a daily driver, traveling 100 miles round trip to work and back, all easy driving

any input would be appreciated

thanks

the reason you probably cant find any 2.4's are the HHR's have been discontinued, and as such HHR specific 2.4L motors may have been used up.
The mor weight you add, the lower your avg MPG will be.. as for the difference in MPG of the two fully loaded, should be close to the same I'd imagine.

I see where the 2014 World Canoe and Kayak races will be in Garrett Co. Great place - I'll be at Swallow Falls this weekend.

Your best bet is to just drive it and see for yourself. Not sure what the numbers are for the '11 models, but for the 06 models, the 2.2 5 speed and the 2.4 auto was very close performance wise. The 06 2.4 5 speed was faster.

Again, no one will be able to really answer that but you.

i don't really care about the gas milage, i am more concerned about the power pulling all that weight around, going up hills, merging into traffic on the interstates , especially with the AC on, etc

There are no 2.2 5 speeds closer than Oregon? Just for a test drive?

Its seriously a difference of only .2L

Point TWO.

The typical LAP/LE8 (newer 2.2L) has 155hp and a 150 ft-lb of tq at 4800 RPM.
The LE5 (2.4L) has 175hp and 165 ft-lb tq at 4800 RPM

Its a twisting force difference of 15 ft-lbs. That's your pulling power.

Would you notice 15 ft-lbs? You may notice 20hp, but tq is what matters.

I've had 2.4L rentals from 2009 and have my new 2.2L 2010. There serious is very little difference-only noticeable on downshift and passing on highway. The VVT really woke up the 2.2L.

Buying any vehicle cross country is fraught with danger/hassles/uncertainty, I'd keep looking for something in Maryland/Virginia/Pennsylvania.

Why are you looking to get rid of your '06, how many miles do you have on it, and are you having problems with it?

Nacademus does have a valid point, you feel torque, and having an extra 15ft lbs is nice....but do you really need it, maybe not.

I have a pair of 2.2's and a 2.4, the biggest difference I feel is that the '06 is down on power compared to the '07 2.2 and especially the '11 2.4. Its all down to the state of tune, all the engines across the board in '06 are derated compared to what followed in later model years.

You really need to find a 2.2 five speed close to you and drive it, even if its a unit on a used car lot. No matter what folks here will and can tell you, its you who has to make the decision. If it were me, I'd keep what I have and give it some routine servicing.

it has 126,000 miles........

i'll be honest, i had origianlly wanted to keep this car for 10 years, but i put on around 25k a year and i don't know how long the motor is good for.

i really only want to trade up because now that i know that the HHR is no longer available, if my car goes down in a year, i will be stuck buyinga used HHR or something new that looks like every other car out there.........

i wish i knew if any company had plans for a retro style vehicle like this in the near future, but my guess is NO, because if there was a market they would have not stopped making the HHR and the PT Cruiser....

i'm not concerned about buying across country, it is new from a dealer.....

shipping and other logistics can be worked out, those costs may be the deal breaker though.....

the dealer is asking what $$$ i want for a trade in

what do y'all think i could get on a trade in ??? it is the 2006 Spring Edition, Victory Red :)

i hate buying new cars, and suck at negotiations
