Dangerous to run with the light on??? I always love these type of questions becasue on car forums you get 1 or several standard answers..
1. Usually from a mechanic for a dealer ect... Yes.. Bring it right in something major could be wrong and cause engine damage over time.
2. usually from a car owner short on funds for a repair.. Nah I have driven with the light on for 2 years and never experienced a problem with the car in anyway.
3. from the SmartA!!... If you own said car... and the engine light is not on the car is not running...
That said I have a Saturn with over 200,000 on it and my EGR valve went kaboom at about 150,000. they want 175.00 dollars for the part from the dealer and at the time i didnt have it so i kept driving it. 50,000 miles later the light is still on and the car still runs perfectly and gets 33 MPG on average.
All told todays cars have so many sensors and the tolerances for setting off a code are so slim that one can usually drive the car for a long time without any noticable effects to driveability. If outside of warranty go down to the auto parts store and get the code read for free and use common sense as to whether repairs need to be made ASP or if you can wait.
