is it possible someone replaced the OEM harmonic balancer with a 2.0 balancer? There are shims for those.
I don't believe so when we tore it down it was behind the sprocket! The thin washers are really flimsy and the one we pulled out was more like the one on the balancer bolt, made out of stamped steel like the flimsy ones. The VIN 3GNDA33P57S594569 MAKES IT A 2.4 Thanks.

I’ve got a 2.4, no shims or washers

This was LNF. The diagrams for the other engines seem to be missing. I didn't go looking too hard.

EDIT: I found the diagrams for 2.2 and for 2.4 - no shims.

But let's think about it. Maybe the shims are pushing the cover out a little? Try without the shims. If it still isn't right, try a new balancer.

The shims would move the balancer not the cover.

Must be the wrong balancer then. The thick washer was compensating for it? I think there would be a point where a washer that was too thick would interfere with the front seal, right?

Here's the 2.4

All I can is without it the balancer rubs the timing cover, we try a new balancer same thing it rubs.

I would guess either the timing cover is bent/deformed or it is not pulling down flush when you snug up the bolts.

Any chance that someone replaced the timing cover gasket but forgot to remove the old gasket ?
2 gaskets would cause the timing cover to stick out too far. Then the balancer would possibly rub on the cover.
