Why am I jonesing for some French fries?

 

 

There is such a thing as black stainless steel.

 

I bought some black stainless steel parts for my Jeep, and they are not really black. More like dark chrome.

Also, why shouldnt you check the gaps on new plugs? Are the tips that fragile? I ask because I recently put in new plugs, checked the gaps, and a couple of them were off and needed to be adjusted. Could I have messed things up?

 

From a NGK website:
If adjusting the gap on fine wire or precious metal plugs such as platinum or iridium, be very careful not to apply any pressure or prying force to the fine wire center electrode or insulator as they can be damaged. The gap should be adjusted by only moving the ground electrode.

In other words. Yes, it's easy to damage the center electrode if done incorrectly.

 

Go for the OEM AC Delco plugs man! I ordered through Amazon and they come pregapped and worked perfectly.

 

Although they may come pre-gapped, you should check new plugs before installing. Rough handling by shippers, vendors etc. could result in some plugs having the gap altered. Most times it's the prong that gets bent down closing the gap.

Back in my "turning wrenches for money" days, I've seen a couple of plugs with no gap. The prong would be bent down touching the electrode. Those new plugs would come from sealed packages.
So. You never know. Best to double check before putting them in.

 

I took a gander at them, but the Delcos came nicely packaged and had a protective sleeve over the end to prevent bumping.
