The MAF is that bit that you must unplug to get the air cleaner off. Either it is not plugged in correctly, a wire is broken or it is broken.

and that would not only effect idle but most likely the rpms it runs at speed correct?

Could a separation in the air intake hose cause a problem? Just discovered this

If you mean the fuzzy pipe that goes to the fender; no.

If you mean the rubber pipe that goes to the carb; yes

The cold air intake tube you speak of , commonly called the woolly worm, is abut expensive but can be replaced by a 3 inch diameter piece of dryer hose, the metal style like this

Your stuck in 3rd gear if it's an automatic.
4th would be 2000 rpm at 60 mph using 215/50R17 tires
