Why can't we install a round K&N air filter in the right fender? And just remove the stock filter.

You can, with an intake.

I think....

He means leaving the stock intake and accumulation box on, removing the SMALL OEM filter from the interior, and installing a filter at, or near the end of the intake hose.

Might be an interesting concept, since increasing filter area is a recognized method of gaining several HP's. In fact, I have heard a couple of people say that is where they believe the HP gain comes from on the aftermarket systems...increased filter area and minimizing intake restriction....not really the design of the tube and/or box.

So, now you can start the flaming.

Gotcha!

Makes sense, if ya can make it work. Not much room under the hood, especially with the cover.

Putting a filter into the Pass side fender is basically impossible without using a .75" pipe. Take the stock breather hose off and reach into there. Its barely enough room to remove the headlight bulb when it goes out. I have tiny little girl wrists and its a PITA. When I made my cold air system this was what I had looked at but even with small 2" piping I couldn't make it between the fender lining and the backside of the headlight. Now I have 2.5" piping dropping down under the ECM and into the driver's fender behind the foglight. Works wonders!

I did not have to unscrew any star screws to remove the Air filter housing. The are 3 rubber grommets that connect to the star screws from what I recall. Simply unclamp the tube to the throttle body, disconnect the MAF sensor connector, pull the hose on the side wall, and give it a firm yank..nothing to unscrew as far as I can tell...I just restore the housing just a few days ago since it is going in for service..

Perhaps someone can verify if the star screw really need to screwed off..BTW, I used the directions from SoCalHHRs site when I installed my CGS. It does not mention anything about removing any star screws to remove the housing.....did I miss anything???

I think the above post was written a bit confusingly; I'm sure he's talking about unscrewing the star screws (Torx), to change out the stock air filter element.

No torx screws need to be touched to pull the air cleaner housing - but if you are replacing your stock element, you will need to remove them.

Hope it helps,

More tips

When you replace the air filter and are ready to refit the housing, please keep this in mind ...

1) turn the air cleaner housing right-side-up
2) clamp the fiber intake hose back on and tighten
3) be sure the clamp notch is properly placed on the hose
4) screw on the MAF sensor
5) fit the assembly back on it mounts
6) clamp the rubber intake hose on and tighten

I found out the hard way that this is the easiest method.
