Stock Air Filter
When I had the first oil change, back a year or so ago, I just had the dealer install the K&N Filter rather than messing with it myself. They didn't charge any extra for doing it. So we're good for 4 or 5 more Years with the little mileage we put on our HHR.Your post made me wonder.
If you installed the K&N FILTER, do you still need to remove and clean it, to maintain it's effectiveness, performance and overall longevity. Or is it just left "in place" for 100,000 miles, or whatever????
Well, I've had a K&N air filter on my '96 Altima since May 1998 at 31,217 Miles (Bought the car used in April '98 with 30,000 miles on it) I took it out and cleaned and re-oiled it in May of 2003 at 63,327 miles. (Car's only got 69,000 miles on it now 4 Years later!) That's just over 32,000 miles on the filter. I don't know that it really needed cleaning then, but I just did it anyway. A lot easier to get at too compared to the HHR.
We've only put about 9,400 miles on the HHR in a year and a half, so I figure it'll be a long time 'til we get near having 32,000 Miles on it.
I don't think I'd just let it sit there for 100,000 miles though. 50,000 seems a more reasonable time between cleanings I would think! Unless you're driving through dust storms on a daily basis.
Performance Tip
One more tip ... I used 92 octane in my latest fill up. I paid more but I noticed an immediate boost in off-the-line and passing speed. Under normal driving, there is no difference but the additional octane really comes alive under a load.
