The best way to close your hatch is the way Chevy recommends; with the handle that they put on the bottom of the hatch that's meant for closing it. That is the only way I close it since I bent the hatch where it meets the beauty bar and had it repaired.
Hmmm, at what point do you pull your hand out so that it doesn't get crushed? In my experience, you have to swing the thing down pretty hard to get it to shut in one movement. I've been using a two phase motion: I'll pull it down with the handle, and then I'll finish it with a gentle push below the license plate (I haven't been paying much attention, but I think that I mostly use the curved sheet metal surface for that). It's hard to believe that this gentle push would bend anything; I'm more worried about causing paint scratches when the hatch is dirty.

I just pull down quick and release. The hatch glides down and locks 9 out of 10 times. Occasionally (the 1 out of 10) it won't close hard enough so it only half locks. I just open it and repeat the process.

to the forum Sacloud and thanks for the advice.
for my self i always use the bowtie to close the hatch and another tip for all members let a door or a window open to close the hatch easier.

Ng, you are telepathic! Please let me know if I'm gonna win the lottery this week!

For sacloud: I typically use the the hand hole on the bottom inside of the door. Get enough momentum and the hatch closes. I try not to put my hands onto the hatch out of fear that I may end up with what happened to you.

And to the site!

That is exactly what I do too. Rarely does it not close and no dents...
