Give us some models...like are you talking about the epicenter? What's a cheap bass controller? Do you have a system?
More info please....
I have Carver's version of the Epicenter and it's 'OK'. (I haven't bothered to install it since high school though, I keep it as a collector's item...(the epicenter does the same exact thing)
It's moreso kind of NEAT by what it does with songs from the 50s and 60s...however, ANYTHING with low bass it sounds terrible (basically because it's sending a bunch of 10-40Hz frequencies though to your subs.)
Don't get me wrong, that could be cool with test tones and such to show off (if your system could handle it) but for pretty much any modern music, it sounds terrible. (which is why they usually come with a kill switch)

Unless you have a woofer setup with large amounts of headroom, it will just cause frequent bottoming out and lots of distortion. The HHR / Pioneer premium setup has pretty good bass extension, but isn't designed for high output at very low frequencies. That little woofer would be trying to jump out of the box.

I am using the Power Acoustik BASS10 processor. Its just a cheapy copy of the Epicenter. Here is my take on it. This is not to make you car louder, although it might. It is really just a sound effect. I personally like the way it smooths out the bass and makes it feel soft but powerful. Thats the best way I can describe it. Its a personal preference type of thing but I really dig the effect.
