no bass

ok, i might be a newb at this, but i know how to wire in a stereo.

i bought a new alpine, the harness and the dash kit from crutchfield. everything came today so i did the install.

plugged everything in but the subs to make sure everything worked. everyting good.

i go to put the CD player in and it wouldn't fit. i had to cut a square behind it so the harness could fit thru.

now, i unplugged my RCAs from the old setup(setup using stock HU with amp and subs) and plugged them into the CD player and the amp.
i went thru the CD player and turned the sub on and the sub up. hardely any bass. checked the amp. everyting good.
turned the gain up a bit and still not even close to what it sounded like before.

anybody know what the problem could be?

Does your head unit have preamp levels? I mean are you able to change your output levels? Be my first guess.
