Arrow Questions about Double DIN install

OK...I have searched the threads down to the very last one and I need this issue consolidated. I am going to install a Double DIN DVD/Navigation system within the next couple of weeks. These are my questions:

1) What adapters do I need to maintain my steering wheel controls and chimes? Crutchfield is extremely overpriced and I can imagine that these adapters are cheaper else where.

2) Can someone post a step by step, either on chevyhhr.net or another website, removal/installation of a double din system?

I want to install this myself and don't want to spend an extra $100 or so for someone else to do it.

Thanks!!

Do you have your HU already ? If not how can you say Crutchfield is extremely overpriced. If you get the HD unit from them install kit is free, mounting, wire harness, install info ect. The adapters to maintain my steering wheel controls and chimes is $130.00 if you get HU also. Yes you can get the HU cheaper but they you have to get mount kit adapters ...... I have looked alot of times and end up back at crutchfield ! The service and know how I find is the better deal in the long run. Look at there repaired HU or marked down stuff still get factory backed. When you get it all at one place like Crutchfield it is a PLUG & PLAY that easy .

I just installed a kw-nt3hdt (jvc) in my 07. I used pac audio interfaces and ended up paying $100 for the 2. In retrospect I would suggest using the metra harness. The metra dash kit will give you decent instructions on removing the radio. I found its easier to remove to the shifter bezel and window trim too. They just lift up. You will need to cut/break out a lot of the inner dash structure to make room for the wiring and boxes. Sounds worse than it is. It doesn't support the dash in anyway, its just in your way. Very flimsy thin stuff. I highly suggest lookin at the jvc nt3 and nt30/50 for a head unit. Really not much on the market that can beat them. The newest jvc is a rebranded kenwood tho.

Hey Oneton,

I wasn't saying that the head units are expensive, I was talking about the harnesses to maintain the chimes and warning sounds. Basically, I was wondering if there are websites with the harnesses cheaper than crutchfield. I can find a good DVD/Nav unit for $600.00 or less easy...I was wondering if anyone has any pictures with a basic removal/install of a double/din head unit while using the adapter harnesses.

James76,

I was checking out that head unit and found one for $599.00 on Amazon and it listed that Metra harness for $50.00!! Pretty cool...but that harness is only to maintain the steering wheel controls right? Do I need another harness in addition to that for my warning chimes?

I got my headunit from them 50 dollars cheaper than anywhere else and when you buy a headunit from them you get half off on the harness you need.

The number one thing I love about the nt3/nt30/nt50 is the speed and responsiveness of the unit. It can be quite a chore to use some of the radios on the market right now because you have to pay so much attention to what you are pushing and sometimes they don't respond correctly. I have had 0 issues with my nt3 in the 2.5 years I have owned it.

I used pac audio pieces

C2R-GM11
$75

NAV-1129
$35

SWI-RC
$40

So I told ya wrong on the cost. I didnt have onstar, but I did have the pioneer system.

Either way you go, I HIGHLY suggest using a relay to power the accessory wire.

Pin 86 to the C2R-GM11's red accessory output
Pin 85 to ground
pin 30 to 12v yellow
pin 87 to the radios accessory input

This way the C2R-GM11 will not burn out, and it will last you many years. I would do this on any harness that turns on via data. In fact some even come with the relay prewired for you.
