Don't know why you would want reverse, but the stock radio uses the Low Speed CAN for speed info. Reverse I suppose could always be taken off of the backup light.

Metra or one of the other radio interface developers have circuits to do the CAN interface.

yes for backup camera, so the HHR has no VSS wire unless you use the can interface box
thanks

Yes, the HHR does have a VSS for a Manual Trans and an OSS for Auto Trans. ChevyMgr would be best to say where the wires would be best accessed, but would have to know AT or Manual trans.

Well the 2009 FSM seems to call it the VSS and the OSS(Output Shaft Sensor) interchangeably for the Auto Transmission, 2009 RPO code MN5 or 4T45-E. All I can tell you is the sensor is somewhere on the Transmission(I can't tell where from the pictures in the FSM, nor looking at my own vehicle. Though I suspect it is under the fuse box area. The two wires go to the Transmission Control Module(TCM) to pins 16 & 41. The TCM is one of the two boxes located in front of the engine compartment fuse box underneath the plastic cover. The wires are colored Yellow and Purple, are twisted together as a pair and there is no splice or connector between the VSS/OSS and the TCM.

I have no idea what type of signal the VSS/OSS puts out or what your radio/navigation unit needs, the installation manual does not say. In fact your installation manual does not specifically reference the “VSS” as such.

Oh, the Yellow wire is referenced as “OSS High Signal” and the Purple wire is referenced as “OSS Low Signal”.

That's all I don't know.
Good Luck!

I think I just found your VSS/OSS sensor. I was rotating my tires for the first time and was looking around at things I had not seen before.

Take off the front passenger tire and to the rear of the drive shaft you will find a two-wire connector on the aluminum transmission case. It even looks like the pictures in the FSM.
