Cold weather brings cool noises!

Anyone have "squeaky bed-spring" noises from the suspension now that the cold weather is upon us?

I find that this is most noticeable driving through dips in the road, when both sides of the front suspension (and then rear) are loaded together... not necessarily over smaller bumps.

Noticed a few threads about similar noises in the non-SS models... but don't think I've seen any SS members mention this.

PS - no smart-a$$ comments from those of you who are fortunate enough to live in areas of eternal sunshine and warmth... especially you SoCal guys

Haven't noticed that on mine - least not yet, then again I'm half deaf so it wold have to be awefully loud before it would get my attention.

Ok, the PS. made it impossible not to reply LOL, But it is cold here tonight, it is down to 55 degrees...burr. Seriously though, I am sure there is no safety issue involved. Take care and have a great holiday. PS. sunny Socal is expecting rain for the next few days Todd (Uma)

I've had my HHR since September 2005. The first winter I did not notice any noise (may have been overcome with new car joy) but the following two winters the suspension would make noise as you have indicated. It has been looked at by the dealerships service department twice (once in the second winter and once last winter) but they did not notice anything wrong and did not do anything to fix it. This is the fourth winter and my first winter outside of warranty. The service manager did tell me that if it was really bad they would look at it again as a courtesy. It hasn't really been cold enough (actually I haven't ventured out in the HHR when it has been cold enough) to get a sense of the noise this winter.

There probably is no safety issue and there probably isn't anything broken but it doesn't say very much for the quality of the vehicle. The engineers should have picked up on the noise during initial testing (I'm assuming they did some cold weather testing) and tweaked things to reduce the noise.

Hharry didn't start squeeking and creaking in winter till we moved from SoCal to NorTucky (come to think of it, I didn't either...). The local Chevy Dealer could find no problem.

Personally I'm more concerned about the front end clunks and rattles that plague our HHRs. Hharry has been operated on several times under warranty and had steering column, shafts/bumpers, etc. replaced only to have noises and vibrations in the steering wheel return. To mask the aggravation I keep increasing the volume at XM 50's on 5 but sometimes wonder if there could be a potentially dangerous situation at work here.

Has anyone here actually experienced/heard of a bonafide steering/suspension part failure?

I'm glad someone mentioned that on here....man its been driving me crazy lately. It really is only in the cold months too. Anyone know if there is something we can do about it? Or is it something we just have to accept and ignore.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Anyone else's SS making these noises in the cold?

I should have mentioned that the bed spring noise (on mine at least) comes mostly from the rear suspension.

No suspension noise here but I did have some noise in the console shifter.

I just unsnapped it and put to padding on some of the points it rubbed. Now no noise.
