Famous Clunk.. Suspesion question.
2007 HHR ls fe5 suspension.
Ok so ive replaced (both sides). Struts w/ all components. Springs. Lower Control Arms, hubs, sway bar links even drilled/slotted rotors.. Everything but them damn sway bar bushings has been replaced in the front end suspension. Getting the famous clunk that everyone talks about. Sooo.. looks like time to look at that... However while im doing it, should I upgrade the sway bar its self to a bigger one? Also I dont want to use energy suspension but is there another choice for poly bushings? Ive tried google/ebay/yahoo but I cant seem to find anything. Thanks.

The bushings are basically generic. I don't remember the diameter for the SS, somebody will chime in. They are relatively cheap from GM.
Are you racing? That's the only reason I can think of to go through the PIA of replacing the bar.

The SS models use a 23mm diameter front sway bar.
LS & LT models use a 25mm diameter front sway bar.
Don't know if you've read this thread yet, but as Don pointed out, changing the bar would be a PITA. Changing the bushings is enough "fun" as it is.

If it were me, I'd just order the proper part number for the appropriate diameter bar(preferably grease-able ones), and do the bushings.
One trick you can try to "shut them up" for a while is to give the current bushings a shot of silicone spray lubricant.

i tried the spray it worked for about 2 days, then came back. i have LS and LS bar. i have new stock bushings already here i tried to put on my self, was a no go. are polys even worth the time?
How is it an FE5 suspension if you have an LT sway bar? By "suspension" do you mean "struts" or did you install SS LCA, Ball Joints, Steering Knuckles, Rack& Pinion, New Computer Firmware for the Rack & Pinion, etc.?
the clunk can also be from your steering column or the shaft itself...ive had the column replaced under warranty and still has the clunk...going to see if they can swap to the new shaft style which supposedly stops this clunk noise in the wheel
i figured it was the sway bar links, the rest has been replaced and aligned. if you hit a bump you hear it, plus i could move the bar by hand slightly up and down while i was working on it all.
