Leveling – Comments on Cobalt SS Rear Springs
Can't decide
Alright...... over the last several days I've read a lot of threads on the forum about these, Cobalt ss/sc, Cobalt ss/tc and the Gold-line leveling springs.... now my brain hurts
I know Gold-line seems to have "gone away" as a company (bought out or whatever) but I'm looking at a used set that have miles on them (20K according to the seller) but appear to be in great shape. Cost is inline with a new set of cobalt springs. (a little more, but not bad)
The part numbers for the different cobalt springs come up slightly different in cost at the link above but neither are $78 to my door unless you guys got free shipping or something......
Cost really isn't my reason for writing this post, It's a concern but all 3 are, as I said, inline with each other.
When looking at photos, the gold-lines look so "wimpy" in comparison to the GM springs and with 20K on them..... I mean do these things sack out eventually? Also they may drop the rear end a little more than I want to go. It's a "hot rod" a little rake is part of the look. Seems in looking at some before and after pics the cars look "level" as far as the roof line goes, but dropped in the rear when looking at space from tire to wheel well.....
Which brings me to the Cobalt's TC vs SC.... TC are firmer and with less drop, right? In this case it would seem the TC would handle better unless the added drop of the SC works better because of lower center of gravity..... difference of 1/4 to 1/2 inch (not a lot of difference there)
I'm adding a Progress sway bar and staying with my FE3 shocks until they wear out, so that will make up the rest of the rear suspension. I know nobody has tried all 3 and made a decision that way, and it seems everybody loves the springs they went with............
So..... Which springs am I supposed to get.
(damn, my brain hurts)

I don't know which ones are which, but I'm going to get the Cobalt springs that were used in the early models. It rides softer, and I think I want that? I don't really know, but that's what I'm going to get once I get money.
I have the SS/SC springs and it really rides soft. However, I do a slight pogo effect on launch. Its very slight but I got my springs used. I only put the rears because I was told the front was only going to be a very small drop. I love how it looks even with the front and handles great with my rear sway bar.
That rules out the SC springs then...... not into "soft". I don't want a brick either but I don't think any of the three I'm looking at would be that stiff. Seems with any of the HHRs (except the SS) the firmness of the "sport" suspension FE3 comes from the shocks as they all use the same springs from what I've read. (all meaning LS 1LT and 2LT)
@Eric the SC are the early ones, Supercharged came before Turbocharged

I have the FE3 sport suspension with the progress sway bar and the Cobalt SS/TC springs and there is a noticeable difference for the better over the stock suspension. Hope this helps.
Just looked at your gallery, did you paint the SS/TC springs yellow? Or were those Gold-line's? The lowered pics look like it dropped more than an inch...
O.K. this is what I'm doing. To start, I have a 2010 LS with 300 miles on it. Springs on this are mellow vs. the LT or SS. I'm going with the early Cobalt spring to (I think) match what I have up front. I've taken a measurement at the rocker panel line on a level floor and have difference of 1 1/2" from front to back, measured at the very ends next to wheel well openings.. I'm going with a solid rear bar (aka Progess) If my ride height changes to where my back is lower than my front, I'll make rubber spacers out of mud flaps from an 18 wheeler to go between the spring and OEM mounting pad, which will make the spring firmer and raise the spring rate/load. I'll use the mud flaps because the make up of them are more than enough to take the wear of springs sitting on them.

(damn, my brain hurts)I chose the TC springs cause I haul stuff, & the drop is only 1", & after settling still not quite 1-1/8" which leaves all my wheel gaps all looking & measuring the same (This I like).. & the ride quality is excellent as well, every bit as good as the stock springs in rear were, if not better..
And lowering the rear on mine has Really improved handling..
I waited a month & then added a TTR bar. Just so I knew what each mod did..
No regrets here, if I had got the SC springs & they settled to 1-1/2" they would have been removed & re-sold. Cause I don't want to lower the front. But that's just me..& no offense to those running the SC rear springs.
PS: Leave the GM tags on them, looks factory for warranty purposes...
Just my .02
